Compliance
The course has been created in line with the UK Government guidelines on workplace health and safety, as outlined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
For full details, visit gov.uk.
The UK Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA) requires employers and workers to maintain safe practices by providing training and information on safety risks. This course directly supports this by giving site workers essential knowledge on hazard prevention and site safety protocols, serving as proof of compliance during HSE inspections.
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) mandates that principle contractors must ensure that workers on site are able to manage risks through planning and coordination to prevent accidents. The green CSCS card is required for site access as it demonstrates competence, helping contractors to meet their legal duties.

Green CSCS Card FAQ
What is a Green CSCS Card and who needs one?
The CSCS Green Card, also known as the Labourer Card, is a certification that proves you have the basic health and safety knowledge required for entry-level labouring roles on UK construction sites. It's needed by anyone working as a general labourer or in unskilled positions, to gain access to most sites, as it's an industry standard required by contractors.
What does a construction labourer do, and is the Green Card only for unskilled roles?
A construction labourer typically handles tasks like loading/unloading materials, site cleaning, assisting tradespeople, and basic manual work. Yes, the Green Card is specifically for unskilled or entry-level roles; if you progress to skilled trades, you'll need a different CSCS card colour based on your qualifications.
What are the eligibility requirements for a CSCS Green Card?
To be eligible, you must be at least 16 years old, able to work in the UK, and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test for operatives. You also need a relevant qualification, such as the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, or an approved alternative.
Do I need a Level 1 Health and Safety qualification, or can I just pass the CITB test?
You need both. The Level 1 qualification provides the foundational knowledge, while passing the CITB HS&E test is a separate requirement to demonstrate competence. Without the qualification, you can't apply for the card.
What alternative qualifications are accepted instead of the Level 1 course?
Accepted alternatives include certain apprenticeships, NVQs/SVQs at Level 1 in construction-related fields, or other RQF-accredited awards like the CITB Site Safety Plus one-day course. Check the official CSCS website for the full list of approved qualifications.
What evidence is required to prove I'm working as a labourer (e.g. for self-employed or renewals)?
For initial applications, no specific work evidence is needed beyond the qualification and test pass. For renewals in 2025 and beyond, you'll need proof of ongoing labouring employment, such as payslips, invoices, or a letter from your employer confirming your role.
How do I get a CSCS Green Card step-by-step?
Complete a Level 1 Health and Safety qualification. (included)
Book and pass the CITB HS&E operatives test. (included)
Apply online via the CSCS website or app, uploading your certificate and test results, and pay the fee.
The card arrives in 10-15 working days.
How do I book the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test for operatives?
If you purchase our course package, we'll book the CITB touch screen test for you - it's included in the price. Alternatively you can book the test online through the CITB website or by calling their booking line. Choose a convenient test centre or opt for a remote online version if available, and prepare using official revision materials like the CITB app or book.
What should I expect during the CITB HS&E test (e.g., format, duration, pass mark)?
The test is a 45-minute touchscreen exam with 50 multiple-choice questions on health, safety, and environmental topics. The pass mark is 47 out of 50, and it includes behavioural case studies; results are given immediately.
How much does a CSCS Green Card cost, including training and test fees?
The official CSCS card fee is £36. The CITB HS&E test costs £22.50, and Level 1 training varies from £50-£150 depending on the provider. Total cost is typically £100-£200, excluding any optional services.
How long does it take to get a CSCS Green Card after passing the test?
Once you apply online with your test pass and qualification certificate, the card is processed and posted within 10-15 working days. Digital versions may be available sooner via the CSCS app for immediate use.
How long is a CSCS Green Card valid, and what are the new 2025 renewal rules (e.g. 2-year vs 5-year cards)?
From February 1, 2025, new first-time Green Cards are valid for 2 years. Renewals are for 5 years, but require proof of continued labouring work and a renewed HS&E test pass within the last 2 years.
